Max Fast Flyball At Stevensville, MI. The Golden Rules of Training…
Dogs are creatures of habit and repeat behaviors that benefit them. If the dog repeats a bad behavior, ask yourself, “How is she/he getting rewarded?” Negative attention is better than no attention at all to a dog, and is considered a reward to the dog.
The more you incorporate training into your daily activities; the faster your pup will be a part of your family.
Dogs trust leaders who are fair and consistent. They cannot trust someone who changes the rules of the game.
If we are calm, the dog will become calm. If we get excited, the dog will follow our mood.
Dogs can read our body language. If we are happy or upset, they can tell. Keep your tone of voice in mind. You must be present and alert if you expect your dog to be.
If we punish dogs by physical means, it is an invitation for them to do the same to us.
The more consistent we are in training, the quicker the dog will learn. As a family, adopt the simple language you will use and stick to it. Keep it simple.
Repetition works; keep with the plan and don’t give up. Have realistic goals and expectations by starting small and working up to more challenging exercises.
Don’t be stingy with treats in the beginning. You both will be happier with the results. Keep the treats small and delicious.
Your timing and feedback is key. Mark the exact behavior you are rewarding with “YES!” Well-Heeled Dogs (C) 2010
